We have had many friends and family members tell us that they wished they had been present with us when we got married in Canada in 2010. Well, consider yourselves present with us today, as our legal marriage is finally recognized in our home state of Texas and in all others states across the United States. We celebrate with you today, and will continue to celebrate every year hereafter, our Equality Anniversary every June 26th. |
Why is this a big deal you may ask? You were already married, right? Yes, we were married, but not in everyone’s eyes. By having our union recognized by our home state we now enjoy the same protections and benefits that all other married couples enjoy: community property spousal protections, spousal social security benefits for retirement and survivorship, spousal health insurance benefits, annuity beneficiary options for spouses, automatic recognition with regard to spousal health decisions in the case of incapacitation, and being listed as a spouse on a death certificate. And these are just the tip of the iceberg.
But more than any of these issues, is the dignity and respect that we hope to gain in the hearts and minds of society. Yes, the law has now changed, but we understand that the human psyche is not as quick to embrace change.
And that is why I was called to write The Door of the Heart. I was charged, by God, to make a difference in the struggle for love, inclusion, and equality. And I know, from responses I have received by many, many readers, that their eyes have been opened, their hearts softened, and their understanding made more clear by reading the stories in my novel. I have been affirmed in my call every step of the way and I will continue to tell my story to help make a difference.
Please help continue this wave of justice. Read The Door of the Heart today and share it with everyone you know.
And thank you for being here today, on our Equality Anniversary. Your presence and support mean the world to us.
